How an Australian Company Leads the Future of Drilling Electrification

By BROGEN | Oct 12, 2025

Project Background

In January 2025, a renowned drilling rig equipment company based in Australia approached Brogen with a bold vision: to electrify its entire fleet of heavy trucks and integrated drilling equipment. Facing urgent timelines and component delivery constraints, the client needed a partner capable of delivering a full-stack EV battery system solution — not just standalone packs, but a tailored integration of BMSBTMSHV box, and electric drive modules.

Over the course of the collaboration, Brogen has already delivered a fully operational electric drive solution for the first heavy-duty crew carrier truck and motorized components for the rig system. Now we are helping in the battery solution of drilling rig. The project will eventually scale to more than 20 electric trucks by 2030.

Challenges

The client sought a solution that could meet industrial-grade energy demands while avoiding the costs and delays of custom mold development.

Key challenges included:

  • Component availability & integration complexity:
The client’s original EV battery supplier was unable to deliver the required battery control units and power electronics within the needed time frame.
  • Constrained installation space:
Integrating 500 kWh of energy into a compact truck chassis required innovative thinking. Brogen sourced BYD blade cells, known for their high energy density and thin-profile structure, making it possible to deliver within space limits.
  • Battery bracket & enclosure design still evolving:
As the client continues refining the vehicle layout, Brogen’s engineering team engages in iterative collaboration on mounting systems and structural interfaces.
  • Software & control strategy gaps:
The customer still lacks expertise in power control logic and BMS integration and is in the learning phase. Brogen fills the gap by providing software built on proven EV platforms and supported the client’s team with debugging, validation, and remote diagnostics.

Thermal Management: Smart, Scalable BTMS Architecture

Thermal performance is critical in the rugged, high-variance environment of drilling operations, with ambient temperatures ranging from 5°C to 50°C. To manage heat from five parallel-connected ev battery packs, a high-performance BTMS is essential.

  • 26kW BTMS unit—standard for electric buses—was ruled out due to size limitations on the truck platform.
  • Brogen proposed using one 15kW BTMS, with the option of two 15kW BTMS units in parallel, to balance performance and size constraints.
  • Our BTMS system is compact and offers full dual-mode (heating and cooling) capability, ensuring safe operation across extreme climates.

Engineering Intelligence: Beyond the EV Battery

Brogen’s approach to electrification is holistic. In addition to ev battery systems, we deliver:

  • PDU (Power Distribution Unit) for intelligent switching
  • Custom BMS software, the software is currently produced by our technical team with reference to previous cases
  • Full-stack integration support, including wiring harnesses, CAN protocols, and system commissioning
  • Remote diagnostics and engineering support, ensuring clients scale with confidence

Toward a Greener Future in Drilling Exploration

Drilling sites—especially in remote or high-impact zones—are under increasing pressure to reduce their carbon footprint and operational noise. Traditional diesel-powered drilling rigs and heavy trucks not only emit high levels of greenhouse gases but also incur rising fuel and maintenance costs.

At Brogen, we are committed to helping industrial clients in the drilling and exploration sectors transition to clean energy systems through reliable battery-powered platforms. Electrifying heavy-duty fleets isn't just a technological upgrade — it’s a statement of environmental responsibility.

By replacing combustion-driven rigs with battery-powered systems, operators can:

  • Reduce Scope 1 emissions
  • Lower fuel logistics complexity
  • Improve safety with quieter, cleaner machinery
  • Comply with ESG and regulatory frameworks

Whether you’re operating in Australian outback or Middle Eastern deserts, Brogen offers the engineering expertise and component reliability needed to bring your vision for zero-emission drilling operations to life.
